EDUCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS:

· All residents, including those with GEDs and High School Diplomas, are required to attend school and/or vocational programs
· Complete all assignments to the best of your ability

RESIDENT HANDBOOK
Working together to achieve the common goal of success
Hygiene
· Personal hygiene must be completed daily to include showers
· Common hygiene products shall be
monitored and passed out by the shower monitors
· Only two shower monitors shall be utilized and resident doors must be secured
· One
person at a time in the restroom. Ask permission prior to entering the restroom
· Undergarments shall be exchanged daily
· Scrubs
shall be exchanged two times a week
· Sheets shall be exchanged weekly and blankets shall be exchanged monthly
· All hygiene
items must remain in yellow tote/envelope when not in use
· Ten minutes is the maximum time for showers and hygiene. (Time
starts when you are called out of your room)
· Unrolled dirty socks and undergarments go into the mesh bag.
· Do not
leave any items in the bathroom when finished with shower/hygiene or any time
· Clean up after yourself in the bathroom
· You
will have access to a shaver weekly. Shavers will be issued by a supervisor and may not be used for haircuts
FACILITY
APPEARANCE:
Room Expectations
· All sheets, blankets and towels shall be folded and placed
at the foot of the bed (refer to room picture)
· All other items shall be stored in the tote and placed at the foot of the bed
· No
items shall be left on the floor or window ledge
· Pictures must be appropriate, as determined by staff, and must be placed in
the painted squares located in rooms. Max number of photos are 10.
· No more than 20 pieces of paper in you room, excess will
be considered contraband and disposed of as such. This count does not include legal, journals but does include magazine pictures and
newspaper pictures
· All letters and papers must be unfolded, stored out of envelopes and kept in the totes otherwise the paper
will be considered contraband
· Incoming envelopes are not permitted in room-write return addresses on the letter received (don’t
tear addresses off)
· Hygiene items are allowed in residential rooms unless abused
· Any combination of two reading items
plus one religious publication is allowed in the room (no magazines or hard cover back books are allowed in residential rooms)
· Rooms
may be searched for contraband at any time
· Doors are to be secured with lights off when the room is not occupied
· Room
must be clean and free of debris at all times
· One light on at all times when rooms are occupied, residents must be visible to
staff
Clean Up Expectations
· Major pod clean up shall be conducted every Saturday AM
· Daily
clean up will occur on the day and evening shifts
· Day clean up will include sweeping, mopping of rooms, bathroom wipe down,
and vacuuming
· Evening clean up shall include cleaning bathrooms, vacuuming, wipe down of common areas, laundry, and trash removal.
· Cleaning
shall be completed under staff supervision
· No more than four residents are allowed on the clean up crew
· No residents allowed
in the clean-up closet
· Always clean up after yourself
· Residents are not to handle any chemical without the required protection
and training
PEER INTERACTION:
· No racial slurs
· No sexual, gang, drug/alcohol, or war stories communication
· No
whistling
· No incitatory communication
· No vulgar and/or disrespectful communication
· No inappropriate sexual remarks,
gestures, writing, or communication
· No borrowing, gambling, lending, trading, punking, receiving, or giving away any items
· Nicknames
are not to be used; peers will refer to each other by first and/or last name
· Treat other residents with respect and do not
discuss reasons for detention
· You are expected to refrain from assaulting or fighting. If anyone threatens or intimidates
you, bring it to the attention of staff
· No touching, or resting your head on peers
· No combing or brushing other peers
hair
· No horseplay
· No passing of notes
· Ten minute blue and black phone calls
· Outgoing professional calls including
Attorneys, potential placements, GAL’s, Probation Officer, Social Services, Clergy and Client Managers shall be completed when it
does not interfere with school and before 5pm
· Under no circumstances should residents get involved in physically controlling
or restraint situation involving other residents
STAFF EXPECTATIONS OF RESIDENTS:
· Residents will refer to staff by appropriate title (Mr., Mrs., Ms.) followed by
first and/or last name.
· Always follow staff directions and the facility norms
· Ensure the safety of yourself and others
at all times
· Participate in all aspects of the program
· Stay away from staff desk
· Be polite and respect self and
others
· Only staff are allowed to adjust or change channels on the TV or video equipment
· No climbing or lying on furniture
or tables
· Must receive permission from staff to use the phones
· No leaning in your chairs or putting feet on tables
DINING HALL
· Residents should proceed to the dining hall in an orderly fashion, under the supervision of the residential staff.
Residents must follow all line norms including hands behind backs in diamonds, etc.
· Raise hand to talk to pod staff and do not
leave the table without staff permission
· Sit with your legs under the dining hall tables
· Get all required meal items in
one trip through the serving line
· No communication until your table has completed all meals and has dumped trays
· Residents
are to wait for the entire table to finish eating before dumping their trays
· No communication between peers receiving food and
those serving
· No talking across tables or to other units
· Fill up all tables before sitting in the chairs
· No standing
without staff permission
· Each pod should clean spills on walls, tables, chairs, and remove paper and food from the floor prior
to leaving the dining room.
· No throwing any items for any reason
· Do not mark on any tables including when
they are wet
· No trading, betting, giving away, receiving or “punking” for food
· As residents are dismissed by the residential
pod staff and are to proceed from the dining area in an orderly manner
· No use of the restroom in the dining hall unless it is
an emergency
· Do not take food/items from the dining hall
RECREATION
· No arguing,
screaming or yelling
· Stay away from all windows and doors. This includes looking at other residents or pods through them
· Do
not hang clothing on doors
· No chairs allowed in recreational area
· Recreational equipment may not be removed from the common
areas
· Play fair and share the equipment
· No leaning on or sitting by the walls. Always stay in the yellow line unless other
wise directed.
· When outside, move to the inner area of the painted yellow lines on the basketball court and face the opposite
direction when another pod is in movement
· Stretching and/or calisthenics shall be done for ten minutes at the beginning of every
recreational period as a group in order to participate in rec
· Recreational equipment will be secured in the gym at the end of
each recreational period
· No tumultuous activities (i.e. throwing or kicking balls at each other)
· Residents will participate
in recreational activities required by school, PT or Structure Leisure Time, unless excused by medical staff
· No sitting during
recreational activities
· Those refusing recreation must sign documentation and will be required to attend, just not participate
· Residents,
that do not participate in recreation appropriately, will only be allowed to run or walk around the court yard for their remainder
of rec time
· No kicking or throwing items on the roof
· Misters are for cooling off not drinking
· No spitting anywhere
in the facility except for staff designated areas
· Residents are to sit/lay on the benches appropriately, no sitting on the back
half that folds out
POD NORMS
· Do not approach staff’s desk without permission
· No feet on furniture
· No standing
or climbing on furniture
· No horseplay-No touching
· No braiding of hair by staff or peer
· Stand by stair rails for
needs and/or request
· Respect peers and staff
· No borrowing or lending of items
· Respect other’s personal property
· Use
respectful language
· No inappropriate screen savers or drawings on the pod computer
· No deletion of computer program or
use of passwords
· Clean up after yourself (room, living unit, school, dining hall, etc.)
· Do not be late for assigned programs
(groups, line, school, etc.)
· No staff shopping or manipulations
· Noise may not exceed conversation level
· Never approach
pod exit doors without permission
· Stay out of door windows and no communication through windows
· No tampering with locks
LINE
AND MOVEMENT
· No talking in line (including to staff, teachers, etc.)
· Face forward at all times, no looking at other pods
· No
communication with other unit including sign language, lip syncing, or gestures
· Hands at rest behind backs with diamonds
· Count
loud and clear through every door, unless otherwise instructed
· Stop at all corners and wait for staff directions
· Use the
bathroom prior to movement
· Line up quietly and promptly in areas designated by staff
· Always double up when in line, unless
told otherwise
